Dusshera, Vijayadashami The end of the evil

The festival which marks the end of the evil, popularly known as Vijayadashmi or Dasara or Dusshera is a major religious Hindu festival which denotes the end of Durga Pooja or Ramlila.

It is celebrated on the tenth day of Ashvin month which falls in the Gregorian month of September and October. The festival displays pandals, community gatherings, immersion of Durga or burning of Ravana, plays, and recitation of scriptures. This pious festival recalls goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon to help restore Dharma while in the northern, southern and western states; it signifies Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. Dushhera celebrations include the procession of the statues of goddess Durga in a river or ocean and also idols of Ravana are burnt symbolizing evil’s destruction.

In most of the western and northern India, Dash-Hara literally means ten days celebrated to recall the victory of Rama. The famous literature works like Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas are performed and demons Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Meghanada are burnt on bonfires. This festival is celebrated throughout India but particularly in Ayodhya, Varanasi, Vrindavan, Almora, Satna and Madhubani.

This year, the festival will be celebrated on 30th September and the vijay muhurat is from 2:14 pm to 3:02 pm. It is considered as an auspicious day to buy or commence a new event or a project. Of the three and a half auspicious muhuraths of the Hindu calendar, Dussehra is one of those.
